Konrad Hoffmann was born in 1926. During his period of training right after World War II he studied the photographic art of the turn of the century -- a topic which is reflected in the works presented in the current exhibition.
"Views on Germany" is a series of portraits: famous public figures as well as unknown persons from the neighborhood express their opinion about Germany. These views are written in short sentences on plates with which the portrayed person was photographed in Hoffmann's studio near Berlin's Alexanderplatz.
Hoffmann has been working on the portrait series since 1990. He invited his models according to their profession and age without trying to influence their opinions and ways of expression. Important to him was only the representation of a concrete situation -- the unrepeatable moment. Thus, neither the artist nor the person portrayed had the chance to chose the "nicest" picture.
