Antifascism was central to the East German idea of tradition. The notion of class struggle was directed toward everything that fascism, evolving from capitalism, has been setting against the socialist ideal. Therefore it was necessary to be wary not only of old nazis but also of every kind of opposition. The registered "Victims of National Socialism" (OdF) founded their own organization in 1947, "United Victims of Nazi Persecution" (VVN), which was considered, however, as too independent by the SED leadership. It was dissolved again in 1953. Almost all members of the OdF disappeared from important political positions. National memorials like the former concentration camp in Buchenwald, which opened in 1958, were still honoring the legacy of the victims.
