State Citizens

After the foundation of the GDR, the government had to win the approval of its citizens for the state and the established SED. The desire for identification got its formal expression in new personal documents as well as membership cards for the party and other mass organizations.

The "Ten Commandments of Socialist Morality", pronounced in 1958, were meant as guidelines for the shaping of a new socialist human being. Public participation in government business and the development of all social interests, which also remained only formal, was nevertheless staged with a lot of propaganda. The working class, allied with co-operative peasants, and the intelligentsia were supposed to agree with the new country in a "National Front of the Democratic Germany."
