"History on display"

New acquisitions from the collections of the DHM

15 December 1995 -- 12 March 1996

Since its foundation in 1987, the German Historical Museum has been collecting objects of historical importance. One year ago, the DHM opened its first permanent exhibition -- a walk through history called "Witnessing German History." Naturally, it has been impossible to show every object the collections of the museum hold. But now, the visitors will be able to see some of the newly acquired objects in our exhibition hall on the ground floor.

Between 15 December 1995 and 12 March 1996 approximately 300 objects will be on display, originating from the late 15th century to the present. The exhibition will present paintings, sculptures, applied arts, furniture, and toys.

The objects, which were bought between 1987 and 1995, present many aspects of the program of the German Historical Museum, which includes political history, the history of ideas and mentalities, and the history of the human body. The spectrum reaches from seemingly worthless objects of everyday life to important works of art, provided they reflect in some way the history of Germany in its European context.

Political events have always been embedded in the everlasting flow of time. But life and death, gender relations, or the history of the body and its diseases also respond to the "big events" of history -- naturally with some delay and often in a roundabout way. Our "walk through history" is structured accordingly: the right "showcase" deals with the history of everyday life -- the left one follows important political events.
