Part of the life style of the "Golden Twenties" -- along with theaters, musicals, cabarets, and movies -- was dancing. The "Charleston" became the most popular American dance in Germany, not least because of Josephine Baker, who in 1927 gave performances with her "Charleston Jazzband" in Berlin. The necessary freedom of movement was guaranteed for the "new woman" by knee-length shirt-dresses, embroidered with glass beads and paillettes. The weight of the dress made it swing rhythmically according to the movements of the dance.
