With the classical motif of the staircase of life, the steps of Napoléon's development are shown from a Corsican boy to his fall in the Battle of Leipzig in 1813. This etching was made before the Battle of Waterloo; thus it portrays Napoléon's end as banishment to the Italian island of Elba.
