On the 150th birthday of Karl Marx, East Germany minted 76.538 memorial coins. Soon 23.392 of them had to be melted down again in order to make different memorial pieces. On the 75th birthday of Walter Ulbricht, East German head of state, the State Bank presented him with a cassette with 5 memorial coins, one of them being a gold copy. It is now the rarest East German coin, because only this one copy had been made.
