8 Hitler and No End
Although the identification of the majority of Germans with Hitler gradually began to dissipate soon after the »German catastrophe«, the political, social and mental legacy of the Nazi past continued to weigh heavily on the following generations. Each post-war German society is forced to ask itself anew how the phenomenon of Hitler had been possible and has to create its own image of Hitler. Hitler and his predominance continues to exert their perverse power of fascination. The political disassociation with the Nazi past is meanwhile an integral component of our political culture. And therefore we are nowhere nearly finished with Hitler.
