Myths of the Nations
1945 – Arena of Memories
Two volumes

Edited by Monika Flacke

The two-volume, German-language companion book to the exhibition describes in more than 30 essays the history of memories of the Second World War as experienced in Europe, the USA and Israel. It presents the history of the memories of 30 nations country by country, rather than following a thematic arrangement, like the exhibition itself.
The book is not limited to the Western European countries involved in the war, but treats all of Europe, including the parts which had disappeared from view in the West until 1989. A number of objective difficulties arose during the preparation of the book. The methods of pursuing art history and political history are very different in the different countries. Nor are the countries all on the same discussion level as to their view of their history, which means that the various contributions are not uniform in content or method. Moreover, the terms often have different meanings in the different countries. In order to help establish a certain orientation, we have added a glossary at the end of each of the volumes. Short biographies of the people mentioned in the articles who played a role in the war are also included here. It also appeared advisable to include a chronology at the end of each essay. It deliberately begins with World War I, the period of the reordering of Europe, and ends with the turn of the millennium. By means of maps that are also tacked onto the essays, readers will be able to grasp the most important geographical changes in the 20 th century. Chronologies, glossaries and maps are also a useful aid for those who would like further orientation about the European sphere. The table of contents only partly follows the alphabetical order. Countries such as the Ukraine or White Russia (Belarus), for example, can be found under the Soviet Union. This is because they were republics of the Soviet Union until 1989. After 1989 they are represented with their own articles. A similar rule applies to the Baltic states, which are listed under the Soviet Union, or Slovakia, which can be found under Czechoslovakia. Germany comprises both the Federal Republic of Germany and the German Democratic Republic. If you would like to get an overview of the contents, there is a link to Inhaltsverzeichnis / Table of Contents. There is also a link to Leseprobe / Readings.

The companion volume is published by Verlag Philipp von Zabern and comprises 970 pages with around 900 illustrations in colour or black-and-white. The museums edition of the companion volume can be found in the Museum Shop and costs 50 €. It can also be ordered online at the Museum Shop, with postage and handling costing an additional 6 €. The book trade edition of the companion volume costs 128 € and can be found in bookshops.
