Painting and playing music were favourite pastimes. The children performed theatre plays and were instructed in foreign languages, history, geography or even in housekeeping and agriculture. A second castle was bought in 1848 in the Scottish Highlands, in Balmoral. Here the family spent the autumn. Dressed in a tartan, Albert was able to indulge in long hunting expeditions. Life in the country was made easier by telegraphic connections and railways.
