"Town of Tomorrow, "Symbol of our Life", "Town without Precedent" - that is what they were supposed to be - young, modern, forward-looking towns. Designed on the drawing board, the two towns in divided Germany embody the confidence and euphoria of reconstruction in the post-war period, the trust in progress and modernity, but especially the conviction of their planners that the future belongs to their country alone.
The industrial towns of Wolfsburg and Eisenhüttenstadt, the one just under 60 years old, the other 12 years younger, are no doubt the most important towns to be founded in Germany in the 20th century. Both were significant as exemplary model towns.
