Synopsis: Dieser preisgekrönte Zeichentrickfilm stammt von den gleichen Künstlern, die später mit Orwells Animal Farm einen Klassiker des Genres drehen sollten. Irgendwo in Europa streiten zwei Nachbarn, ein Schuhmacher und ein Hutmacher, über den besten Weg, ihre Geschäfte nach dem Krieg wieder aufzubauen. Der Hutmacher will nur wenige Hüte produzieren und mit Einzelstücken höhere Gewinne verdienen. Der Schuhmacher erkennt den Bedarf an vielen Schuhen und will die Kosten durch Massenproduktion senken und Profite durch Export und freien Handel erwirtschaften. Nach vielen Umwegen beweist der Schuhmacher schließlich, dass der freie Handel beiden Wohlstand bringen kann. Die Gegensätze zwischen Protektionismus und freiem Handel sind bis heute nicht gelöst und so wirkt dieser amüsante Film so frisch wie eh und je. Description: A prizewinning colour cartoon made by the same husband and wife team that later turned Orwell’s Animal Farm into a classic of animated storytelling. Two neighbours, a shoemaker and a hatter, argue about how best to recover their livelihoods after the war. The hatter believes in producing few hats at a high profit per hat, protected by tariff. The shoemaker sees the need for lots of shoes. He wants to lower their cost through mass production and make his profit through export and free trade. After many adventures, the shoemaker eventually proves that free trade can bring prosperity to them both. Since the free trade vs. protectionism argument is still in today’s headlines, this film is fresh as ever.
