Völkerbund

Die internationale Neuordnung
nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg war nicht zuletzt
ein Verdienst des Völkerbundes.
Schon im Vierzehn-Punkte-Programm
vom Januar 1918 hatte der amerikanische P
räsident Woodrow Wilson eine übernationale Schlichtungsinstanz gefordert.
Die Völkerbundsatzung wurde Teil
des Versailler Vertrages.
1920 nahm die Organisation in Genf ihre Tätigkeit auf.
Dort tagten auch ihre Zentralorgane:
die Generalversammlung und der Rat der Mitglieder.
Die Organisation trug dazu bei,
die Friedensverträge umzusetzen.
Sie regierte Danzig, das Saarland und
das Memelgebiet, sie überwachte
mehrere Mandatsgebiete, darunter Palästina,
und verhalf Millionen
von Kriegsgefangenen zu ihrer Rückkehr.
Die traditionelle Machtpolitik einzelner Mitgliedsstaaten
vereitelte das Hauptanliegen der Organisation,
nämlich die Schlichtung internationaler Streitfragen.
Der Völkerbund beschloss
am 18. April 1946 seine Auflösung.
Kapital und Verwaltungsapparat gingen in der UNO auf.

League of Nations

The reorganisation of the international
order after the First World War was due
not least to the efforts of the League of Nations.
In his Fourteen Point Programme of January 1918,
The American President Woodrow Wilson had called
for an international arbitrating body.
The League Covenant became part of
the Treaty of Versailles.
The League of Nations assumed
its duties in 1920 in Geneva, where
the General Assembly and
the Council convened.
The organisation helped to implement
the peace treaties.
The League of Nations governed
G dansk, the Saarland, and the Klaipeda region,
it oversaw several mandates including Palestine, and helped millions of prisoners of war to return home.
The traditional power politics of some
member states caused the organisation
to fail in its primary objective of
mediating international disputes.
On 18 April 1946, the League of Nations was dissolved.
Its assets and administrative
bodies were taken over by the United Nations.
