Franz Radziwill’s painting Village Entrance does not show a country idyll. The unreal, disquieting atmosphere of the work is in part the result of a heightened realism combined with inexplicable, seemingly apocalyptic celestial appearances. It looks like the people are expecting something that lies beyond the edge of the painting.
