In 2011, the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin – Preußischer Kulturbesitz (Berlin State Library – Prussian
Cultural Heritage) celebrates the 350th anniversary of its foundation. That makes it worth
while presenting some of its outstanding treasures at the German Historical Museum.
The largest universal academic library in Germany has its origins in the "Churfürstliche
Bibliothek zu Cölln an der Spree" (Electoral Library at Cölln on the Spree River) established at
the Berlin Palace in 1661. About half of today's collection is constituted by the "modern
publications", some seven million books and periodicals printed in all languages of the world
after 1945. The other half of holdings consists of special collections. Their noteworthiness lies
in either their rarity or their historico-cultural value: From the first printed books, dating from
the time after 1450, and other preciously illuminated volumes to the autographs by poets,
scientists or composers, from Far Eastern and Oriental manuscripts to maps and globes, some
of them even hand-drawn.
The founding document of the library by the Great Elector, Mozarts autograph of Le nozze di
figaro, a particularly magnificent Gutenberg bible and further treasures from the collections of
the Staatsbibliothek can be found in the exhibition at the DHM, right next door Unter den
Linden. In a sequence of eight stations, the Library relates its eventful history and ongoing
dedication to research and culture.
