Der Denkmaler bei der Arbeit (1985)

The „godless“ painter from Nuremberg

It is possible to think Prechtls' art as the continuation of a specific art tradition in Nuremberg which reaches back to the late Middle Ages.
There were three artists in medieval Nuremberg who became wellknown as the “godless” painters. These artists, called Sebald and Barthel Beham and Georg Pencz, were expelled by the council during the reformation and Peasants’ war because of their divergent beliefs.
Prechtl seeing himself as an antiauthoritarian “Denkmaler” continues this tradition of self-confident, independent thinking in the present. He understands himself in a manner as a descendant of the disobedient “Nuremberg Three”
