Tsingtao - A chapter of German colonial history in China. 1897 - 1914

An exhibition of the German Historical Museum

March, 27 - June, 23 1998

Berlin

Prolonged until 19th July 1998

An exhibition catalog will be published. Apart from a survey about the era of German colonialization in China, a number of essays will feature the following aspects: German interests and presence in China prior to the territorial occupation, the situation of the Chinese society in the second half of the 19th century, the occupation of the Bay of Kiaochow, and the construction of the colonial town of Tsingtao. Furthermore discussed will be the daily life of Germans and Chinese in Tsingtao, the development of the hinterland by German railroad and mining companies as well as the conflicts which gradually arose. Likewise, the Boxer Rebellion and its suppression will be presented and the forced atonement mission of a Chinese prince to Berlin. Finally, the question will be dealt with in how far a mutual understanding was able to shape the social life of Chinese and Germans. The aftermath of this mutual but unequal epoch and the ways of dealing with the past, i.e. the question of equal status of these interpretations will be discussed at the end.
