Lea Grundig’s “Starving Proletarian Boy” and his Secret

The painting “Starving Proletarian Boy” from the year 1928 by the German-Jewish artist Lea Grundig (1906 – 1977, formerly Lea Langer) is part of our exhibition “Weimar: The Essence and Value of Democracy”. In the course of a routine examination an exciting discovery was made, that sheds an intensive light on the context of poverty, illness and death in which the picture came about as Ulrike Hügle, restorer in the Deutsches Historisches Museum’s Painting Restoration department, and Dr. Simone Erpel, the exhibition’s curator, report on the DHM blog.
