Literature is only modern if it presents problems for debate, so claimed the Danish literary critic Georg Brandes. Brandes had been refused a chair in Copenhagen, and was given the following advice by Henrik Ibsen, the Norwegian playwright whose works had caused a furore in German theatres: »One victory in Germany, and you'll be king of the castle back home!«

Germany had a similarly attractive status in the music scene: most Scandinavian musicians of the time spent at least part of their studies at the conservatories in Leipzig or Berlin.
