Various movements such as national, liberal, social, and workers’ and women’s movements originated in the first half of the 19th century. They all agreed on the demand for press freedom due to an increasingly literate society, where newspapers had become an important medium for politicizing and forming opinions, as our exhibition “From Luther to Twitter. Media and the Public Sphere” shows.
