VIII. Epilogue

The End of the Second World War

During the last years of the war and especially after 1945 many artists picked up the thread of the motifs from their earlier visions – evidence of the power of the downfall imagery. Many artists saw the only possibility of portraying the horrors they had experienced but were hardly able to comprehend in falling back on established images and allegorical language. After the end of the war in 1945 it was very rare to find artists coming up with a critical analysis of the political and social origins of the war or the genocide of the European Jews in their works.
