From 1933 on many artists were affected by the repressive cultural policies of the Nazi regime. If their political stance, ethnic or religious background or their works did not conform to the ideological criteria of the Nazi regime, they lost their official positions and were often banned from exhibiting their works or even carrying out their profession. Many artists decided to leave Germany. They went into exile in major cities such as Paris, Prague, London or New York, where they were able to exhibit and sell their works. In exile the artists often continued to use political allegory in order to deal in coded form with the terror, their situation in exile or the fear of war.
