Collect Films!
The Berlin film collectors Axel Hampel and Kai Nowak
Several cinematheques and film museums are responsible for preserving and maintaining film heritage in Germany, but there are also numerous small archives and collections. They are often owned by private individuals, associations or communities and pursue their own specialised collection interests. Where the large public archives reach their limits, the small archives and collections step in and ensure a more diverse transmission of film heritage. What gaps do the small archives fill? What is collected there, by whom and for what reason? These questions are explored in our event series Sammelt Filme!, in which we have the Berlin based film collectors Axel Hampel and Kai Nowak as our guest in September.
Axel Hampel is a co-founder and active member of Filmbörse Berlin. Since 1987 he has been collecting cinema film trailers as well as cinema commercials and TV commercials on 35mm, which he restores, reconstructs and assembles himself. He supports DVD and Blu-ray editions with trailers from his collection. Axel Hampel has been organising an annual analogue retro trailer show curated by him since 1995.
Kai Nowak has been collecting films and film-related materials such as brochures, posters and poster photos since his youth. With his Kreuzberg-based company Media Target Distribution, he specialises in the production and distribution of high-quality Blu-ray and DVD editions, including Eastern, Gialli and Grindhouse films. From his 35mm film collection, he is presenting two works from Sweden and Indonesia at the Zeughauskino, both of which revolve around strong women. (Philipp Stiasny)
