Insights: The Making of a New Core Exhibition

11 June 2026 6 Min.

The Deutsches Historisches Museum is preparing a new core exhibition to be housed in its historic Zeughaus building. A special film series offers a behind-the-scenes look at this ambitious, multi-year project.

The second film in this series asks how themes from 1,200 years of German history can be selected and presented so that they remain relevant today and in the future. Within the premises of the Zeughaus, which was once a site of collecting and political self-representation, the project team – Fritz Backhaus, Michael Dorrmann, and Stephanie Neuner – explain the structure of the future exhibition and the changes to the way the interior spaces will be organized and used. The film also looks at the DHM’s collaboration with the design studio Atelier Brückner, and explores issues of museum practice concerning the handling of key objects and new forms of engagement.
