The tour through all the exhibition rooms explores the concept of nature using selected objects from 800 years of German history: from the World Egg and the wolf to pictorial representations of destroyed landscapes of the Anthropocene. How has the changing relationship between humans and nature shaped faith, life and society over the centuries? The mystic Hildegard von Bingen, for example, saw nature as a primal force, the ‘viriditas’. In the early modern period, humans began to make extensive use of natural resources and changed the environment permanently. What humans define as nature, how they treat it and what ideas they associate with it is subject to constant change. The tour offers a variety of insights into events and developments that have changed or shaped the concept of nature.
