Democracy Lab

Democracy Lab

4 April to 4 August 2019

From 8 March, open for bookings from school classes and groups

The participatory Democracy Lab of the Deutsches Historisches Museum examines current social negotiation processes. It aims to build awareness for the fact that this form of government lives on the participation and engagement of all citizens, is marked by the continuous negotiating of different opinions and positions, and in this way is constantly able to further develop itself.

In seven theme rooms the project encourages critical reflection on how democracy succeeds in Germany and can continue to flourish in the future. It asks: What basic rights must be guaranteed, what makes elections a component of democracy, who may take advantage of democratic rights, which social prerequisites have to be fulfilled in order to participate in society, what significance do the media and the freedom of opinion have, what role does civil engagement play, and how are conflicts carried out?

The Democracy Lab is devoted to these questions, which are illustrated by original objects from the present day and from contemporary history. Activating and participatory elements encourage discourse and a forum offers visitors the opportunity to express their own opinions and present them for discussion. Within the framework of special educational projects for school classes and groups there will be discussions about the consequences when individual aspects of democracy are destabilised or eliminated.
