Passe-partout workshop

The Deutsches Historisches Museum has its own passe-partout workshop. There, all paper objects, e.g. prints, original drawings, historical documents, photographs or posters, are prepared for presentation in the temporary exhibition galleries and the Permanent Exhibition. This is done in cooperation with the departments of paper conservation and exhibition design.

Putting objects on display places high demands on the conservatorial protection of delicate objects, while at the same time a precise and effective presentation needs to be achieved. Solutions for these problems are found in the passe-partout workshop. The correct size of the frame, the optimal proportion between frame and object and the mounting board selected for the passe-partout all play an important role in creating an effective presentation. When the decision has been made to protect and display an object in a glazed frame, the object can then be presented to greatest effect in the exhibition.
