The tour in the exhibiton “Roads not Taken” explores the question of what forms of government a united Germany would have had at the various junctures in 1989, 1918 or 1866 and how democratic it should be in each case. The revolution of 1848 was in any case the beginning of a democratic awakening in Germany, even if the desired goal of a united country remained unfulfilled at that time.
