A dialogical tour leads through all the exhibition rooms and presents various objects of European remembrance. Between 1945 and 1948, exhibitions were organised in Europe that documented the crimes of the Nazi regime. Exhibitions in London, Paris, Warsaw, Liberec and Bergen-Belsen presented evidence of the National Socialist crimes – the first forms of coming to terms with this injustice for a broader public.
The tour focuses on the different approaches of these early exhibitions and examines, for example, how the Jewish resistance was presented in Warsaw, which objects from the former Bergen-Belsen concentration camp were shown or censored, or how in the Paris exhibition scenes of the Nazi crimes were partly reconstructed in situ by means of original objects from the former Natzweiler-Struthof concentration camp. Also discussed will be the influence of visual presentations, such as films and photographs, on public remembrance.
In dialogue with the expert tour guides, visitors can discuss and reflect on how, in the immediate postwar period, the recent history was conveyed to the public in the three capital cities and the two other important arenas of National Socialist injustice.
